Today we have some exciting news for Apple TV owners! Two clever individuals have actually managed to port the popular Plex utility to the Apple TV without requiring a Jailbroken Apple TV. They call this particular version PlexConnect.
The best part is that PlexConnect is compatible with both the 2nd generation Apple TV and 3rd generation Apple TV running any of the 5.x firmwares (5.0-5.2.1).
The news was first announced over at the official Plex blog where they describe how it all works “Essentially, you run a program on your computer which masquerades as the Trailer app. Next, change one setting on the ATV, and you’re up and running.”
Apparently the whole process takes under two minutes and this particular Plex client uses XML and Javscript, which differs from the client for Jailbroken 2nd generation Apple TVs. The plus of using XML and Javascript is that it is easier to developer for, so you can expect more from PlexConnect in the coming weeks.
For more information about PlexConnect and how to install it to your 2nd or 3rd generation Apple TV, be sure to check out the official Wiki over at GitHub. If you decide to try out PlexConnect, let us know how it went for you in the comments section below.
