With the iOS4.2.1 Firmware, comes the ability for you to stream audio and video to your Apple TV; however Apple put the limitation of not allowing you to stream video content from 3rd party applications to your Apple TV (This means you cannot even stream video content from MobileSafari). As you can clearly see this really limits AirPlay’s streaming functionality, and the usefulness of this feature on your iDevice. Luckily a developer named Hiren Patel has developed a tweak for your iDevice, that allows you to get past this limitation, and open up AirPlay to all 3rd party applications. This tweak is called AllPlay and actually functions very well; just as the developer states this tweak makes Airplay function as it should of been built to function.
If you are interested in the tweak it is available for free via the BigBoss repo. While we said AllPlay functions very well, it still does have a few bugs that need to be worked out and these bugs include:
- Doesn’t enable AirPlay video in Netflix.app. They probably use some custom media player implementation
- Does not work in VLC app either, since it uses its own media player implementation
Besides these couple of bugs, AllPlay will truly open up your iDevice to a true iDevice to ApplTV streaming experience!
Note: This tweak requires the iOS4.2.1 firmware, and it will function on all iDevices.

I installed this one right away. Awesome. I don’t think we’ll see support for Netflix or VLC, unless Apple updates AirPlay to work with those media players. Apple TV has Netflix built in, anyway.

Does it also play Air Video on iPhone/iPad on AppleTV?
