A team of developers have begun work on porting the Linux operating system to newer iDevices with an A4 chip. Meaning you will soon be able to run Linux and maybe even the Android operating system on your iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and iPad. In fact, one of the main developers has recently tweeted that they have actually gotten this Linux port to run on an iPad.

While you have been able to run a version of Android on the iPhone for some time it was restricted to older models such as the iPhone 3G. With this recent porting of the Linux operating system to newer A4 chip equipped iDevices, it means a whole new world off possibilities will unfold for newer iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad models.

And iOS as an OS has a potential which is crippled and locked down. Either way, you can’t call anything superior (or second rate, as is the case here) because no one is objective enough to measure things. Even if there are people who can do that you still can’t tell which is better because different operating systems are better for different people. My argument was about dissing other operating systems just because he owns Apple product… nothing more to it.
Arguing with fan boys is pointless. If you really think iPhone is superior then you should go back in front of mirror and continue looking at yourself. If you think that superiority is defined by taking 4 years to implement option to change wallpaper then you are wrong. iPhone was never superior to anything. Exchange mail plugin for Lotus notes fails an is not supported out of box where iPhone is. Yes i know lotus notes is awful but that’s what we got even though I repeatedly tell the higher ups we need exchange. Money money money they say. Would not be a big deal but the plugin still fails consistently. iPhone, just input settings and go.
iPhone support for WPA2 PEAP MSCHAP V2 wireless authentication is automatic and prompts for user and pass. Android You must manually set it up and input all the properly settings because it does not recognize security settings used and it still fails to connect 5-7% of the time. It not much but enough to cause an IT tech nightmares.
I have and android phone I do not use specifically because of these reasons. I am no apple fanboy. Everything I own is windows based besides my phones. I just want something that is going to work.
List the things an android can do that is actually useful that an iPhone cannot. I am glad to listen because you might teach me something.

1. I can simply hold down the search button on the phone and speak “Directions to 9374 Pennsylvania Avenue 94107” and it will pull up that address on a map and route me there.
2. I can open up gtalk and have a video chat with any of my google contacts over 3G or 4G or wifi.
3. I can actually use 4G
4. I can open up any website that uses Flash and it will work.
5. I can slip in a 32GB SD card to expand my memory instead of buying a new phone.
6. I can buy an extra battery and replace it as needed.
7. I can connect my phone via HDMI to my Television OR I can use DLNA
Those are just a few things that an iPhone device cannot do that many Android devices CAN do. I’m not saying that iPhones or inferior OVERALL but those are features that iPhones are inferior to Android.
I am not a iPhone Fanboi but I really admire Steve Jobs for putting together all available technology (hardware and software) together and made it the iPhone. No one in current history has the vision to do this yet before Steve. Everyone else is copycat afterwards to gain market shares and not left behind. Without Steve, the smartphone markets may need few more years to flourish.
I remember when Steve Jobs at Apple announced the first iPhone in Around 2007, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer laughed at that. He said something like “A phone without Keyboard?”. He thought it was stupid but proved he wrong again after iPhone’s debut and success. He maybe now so regret that he didn’t take iPhone seriously and can only play catch up with Google and Android and iPhone. This is the classical example of vision vs no vision.

I love apple products I own an iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, and apple tv but there’s no reason why one OS system should be better than the other their both great and I would love having android on my iPhone 4 that would make it the ultimate phone. Now fan boys get off Steves nuts and you other guys really do need to give credit where it’s deserved the iOS is pretty stable compared to android. I been around people with android phones and iPhones and the android people always have problems with their phones that’s why i go with apple really but whatever both OS have their ups and downs.

I really don’t see why everyone has to be so aggressive about the “other” OS, calling Android second rate or iOS some other derogatory term. I have an iPad, an iPod Touch 4, an iPhone 3GS, and an iPod Nano 4G. I also have an Asus Transformer and a HTC Desire S.
I always enjoyed using Apple products. But to be frank, after a while, the limitations really got to the nerd side of me and that was a bid reason why I switched to the Desire S. I wouldn’t call either platform weak/inferior and the very fact that both OSes do something so uniquely well (widgets, etc on android; stability, ease-of-use, etc on iOS) makes it so much better for us, the consumer, since it means that both Apple and Google will be scrambling to make their respective platforms better and meaner.
However, when it comes down to recommending devices, I would rarely recommend an Android. (if you have to ask for advice, obviously you don’t know your phones and you’re obviously not going to be able to use it to its full potential) I also rarely recommend the latest iPhone as it usually turns out to be a great deal more expensive than the hardware-superior competition. What I’m driving at is: Android is amazingly powerful, but only in the right hands. iOS is also an amazing OS in its own right, and is considerably easier to use and thus makes it more of a layman platform.
Coming to tablets, though… I have to say I like the iPad alot better than any android tablet I’ve deigned to use (mainly because of the nice build)
i agree with the reliabilty of iphone os vs. android but ubuntu and fedora are much cleaner and productive then win7 or snow leapord or mac os in general. the problem with buggy and unreliable linux lies within the user… but in the case of android i really belive that its mostly the cheaper hardware… haha im acctually found this post while searching for a way to put linux on my iphone 4 haha! (NOT android tho lol) i want to hack and use as mini PC!!!
next year in india google will be testing out new chrome OS on a netbook! running on linux!

that is true and people go on about “internet enabled smart phone” had they hear of the pocket pc, a phone running windows mobile, INTERNET enabled touch screen …… some people have no idea what was out there before someone else pretended it was their idea.
i had an o2 xda 2 amazingly ahead of its time as far as phones go, did everything a cheap laptop could do, had MILLIONS OF APPS but because it wasn’t fashionable everyone was like “ohh but its this ir that” when it was half the price of the best nokias out and did 99% more things

I had a 1st Gen and I have a 4S now. I’ve had the Eris, Evo, Incredible and Droid 3, Imma phone geek. I have a 4S now because my lady dropped my Evo from a very high spot and I stupidly didn’t have insurance. IMHO each device has their pros and cons. The 4S has come a long way since the 1st Gen, but it’s still inferior to Droid. From day one on a Droid you could cut, copy and paste, change your background…and if you were savvy enough w a keyboard and Linux (which is SUPERIOR TO WINDOWS!) you could rip out the carriers version and install your own OS. That’s not possible w the iPhone. The minute you jailbreak the iPhone it becomes buggy, and what’s the use anyway? Just to change the “slide to unlock’ to KFlannigan5 or whatever you choose?
If you’re a techie buying an iPhone is a waste of money. But if you’re a teenie bopper or a middle aged woman with no tech ambitions than an iPhone is what you want. It works out the box and you’re too dumb to care about customizations or having a phone that you can tell is yours and not the strangers next to you. But like the fellow before me said, arguing with fanbois is a waste of time, they can’t hear you with the Apple penis stuck in their ears.

changing the battery doesn’t void warranty… But jailbreaking does…you can get an hdmi adapter for iphone 4s and ipad 2. Plus LTE is not available in many places, so you will be on HSPA+ anyway.

People should stop fighting all of the OS’s do the SAME thing and have their OWN strengths. Its really a matter of personal choice. I love IOS but am looking at a Galaxy Note for my next phone.

I was at shop to get Atrix and my bro just slipped my mind and I accidentally bought iPhone 4S. Now I’m stuck with it don’t know for how many years. And yea I do nothing now except checking tweeter, editing pics and checking Facebook. When I’d my Android before I reduced using my PC about 80%!

Using a Galaxy Nexus (Since we’re comparing Android to iOS, we should compare a pure Google phone to and iDevice.) If you knew anything Android had voice recognition software back on Android 1.6 to current Android 4.0 (Apple didn’t even invent siri. They bought a company out). Why couldn’t they get 4G? Technically (by 4G definition) 4G hasn’t been reached by any carrier. For argument’s sake Verizons LTE is the closest/fastest. My Galaxy Nexus does indeed have LTE. iPhone 4S? No. Second rate OS? HAH! Android is constantly evolving. Sure Google could have gone with a set template for four years and made their OS very polished. They didn’t. The TI OMAP 4480 dual core processor that is packed into my Galaxy Nexus is better then the A4. My Galaxy Nexus is a true multitask OS. I do not have to go back to the homescreen/springboard to switch between apps. Android also had the pulldown notification bar since Android 1.6. With Android I’ve always been able to update via 3G/4G/Wifi have you with iOS? No. Sure Apple was superior on the mobile platform. WAS. Now Android has far surpassed it. If you are going to compare Android to iOS then you have to go off of Google’s developer phone, which is the Nexus line.

First you all need to understand that Linux is not an OS rather it is a kernel. And don’t forget that iDevices is also running on Modified version of freeBSD kernels, which is a fork of linux kernel. Mac os X is built upon modified version of freeBSD and it was named as Darwin kernel by apple and they closed the source.
Apple create things far superior to samsung or google. people may have the idea of a tocuh screen yet it was pretty crap until apple released theres on the iphone.
I bought the first gen iPhone back in 2007 and the iPhone 3g a few years later. But after moving to android I have to say it is my choice mobile OS. Jail broken iDevices are entertaining, but from a rooted android device you can run Ubuntu and basically have a fully functional desktop in your pocket. Android offers a lot more support to developers as well. Most importantly it’s a lot easier to manage when moving between PC’s since it doesn’t require me to download iTunes, or any proprietary software or wipe my phone when moving to a new computer. Options as far as hardware are extremely limited when it comes to any apple product. But really in the end it all comes down to preference, neither OS is really superior to one another in terms of user experience.

You can have your iphone and you can have your linux pentesting device. Each is good for its own purpose. iPhone is effective for Mom and Wife so they aren’t bothering me for support, they are idiotproof. Android is effective for me so I can customize to my hearts content and do what I want. I have a jailbroken ipad and a rooted android and a laptop that septaboots 3 windows OS, 1 mac OS, and 3 linux OS. each for its own wonderful purpose and they all work great in harmony with my needs and wants. Hooray! We all Win!

Guess no-one worked it out just from a purely technical bent, well that sucks balls. Cutting and shutting to get a working device was the name of the game. I have an old iPhone 4 (unsupported) and want to use the internal functionality (i.e. IR detection, magnetometer, etc) as well as a small linux distro that support a touch screen……. S’pose old farts like me are left to do real innovating, while the young bulls run down the hill and waste their energy ………..
