Apple released the iOS 5.1 firmware update right after they announced the new iPad and the Apple TV 3G on March 7th. Although we warned jailbreakers to stay away from the iOS 5.1 firmware update, I am sure there are some people who have accidentally upgraded to iOS 5.1.
Now the reason why accidentally upgrading to the iOS 5.1 firmware is a big deal, is because only the iOS 5.0.1 firmware can be Jailbroken Untethered at this time. This means if you upgraded you will only be able to Jailbreak tethered, or worse, even not at all for those who upgraded their iPhone 4S or iPad 2.
If you are looking for a how to guide on how to downgrade your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad from the iOS 5.1 firmware to the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 firmware then you are in luck! In this how to guide from iJailbreak.com you will learn how to downgrade your A4 iOS device to the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 firmware from iOS 5.1. Before we start however make sure you meet the requirements listed below…
iOS 5.1 Downgrade Requirements:
- Supported iOS devices include the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1G, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G. Unsupported iOS devices include the iPhone 4S, and iPad 2.
- APTicket + saved SHSH blobs for the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 firmware.
- A Windows computer.
Downgrade From iOS 5.1 To iOS 5.0.1 / iOS 5.0
Step 1) – The first thing you will need to do is download a tool developed by iH8Sn0w called iFaith. What the iFaith tool does is dumps the SHSH blobs directly off your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad for the firmware you are currently running. Allowing you to stitch together a custom firmware that can downgrade your iOS device to a previous firmware version Apple is not signing. If you are following this how to guide you most likely already used this tool to dump your iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 SHSH blobs.
Download iFaith 1.4.2 (Windows)
Step 2) – The next thing you will need to do is run iFaith (click the OK button once you have read the warning).
Step 3) – With iFaith up and running you will need to click the Build *signed* IPSW w/ Blobs button.
Step 4) – Upon clicking the button previously mentioned you will need to browse for the saved SHSH blobs file that was created when you saved your SHSH blobs for the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 firmware.
Step 5) – It is now time to browse for the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0 firmware file. Depending on which SHSH blob file you selected you will need to select either the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file or iOS 5.0 firmware file (download iOS firmware files here).
Step 6) – After you have selected the right firmware file iFaith will begin creating your custom firmware file.
Step 7) – When your custom firmware file has been created go back to the iFaith main menu (if you are not there already) and click the Use DFU Pwner (iREB) button. Now simply follow the instructions presented to you for putting your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into pwned DFU mode.
Step 8 ) – With your iOS device in pwned DFU mode you will need to launch iTunes and restore your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to the custom firmware file you created. This can be done by Option (alt) clicking the Restore button on Mac OS X or by SHIFT clicking the Restore button on Windows.
Congratulations! You have now downgraded your A4 iOS device from the iOS 5.1 firmware to either the iOS 5.0.1 firmware or the iOS 5.0 firmware. If you have any further questions or concerns please leave them in the comments section below…

I used this guide to actually upgrade from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 5.0.1. before this I kept getting error 3194 “This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”. this was due to Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0.1 I think. custom firmware I buld with sn0wBreeze didn’t restore either but this guid worked great. thanks very much

I Had the same problem then i jailbroke my ios 5.1 and cydia had a saved SHSH blob so what i did was that i used tinyumbrella to save the 5.0.1 shs blob and then followed the steps above. hope this helps

Upgraded from 4.3.3 JB to 5.1non-JB through iTunes.
Used TinyUmbrella to grab my previous SHSH Blobs from 4.3.3 (I had never used/backed up these prior to upgrading to 5.1 so I was lucky to grab them).
Used iFaith as outlined above with SHSH Blobs from TinyUmbrella, and let iFaith download the 4.3.3 FW to downgrade.
(I had the options of 4.3.3 / 4.3.4 / 4.3.5 / 5.01 when using TinyUmbrella to grab the blobs.)

2 days ago i tried to upgrade my ios to 5.1(downloaded from idownloadblog) but it stuck on restring ipod software (ITUNES 1.6 )! after that my ipod was in recovery mode!

u can downgrade a4 devices with shsh blobs, but u can never downgrade a5. so downgrading 4s to ios 5.0.1 is a no no. If you do have ipad 2 with shsh blobs saved for ios 4.3.3 then gr8 for u
try getting the latest version of tiny umbrella and press save shsh blobs when the tss server is not running but u have to have ur idevice in dfu mode

Hi guys, need some help
Ive made the custom firmware and put my iPhone 4 into pwned DFU mode, but whenever i shift-restore, the restore progress bar gets to the end and then iTunes throws an error 37.
This has happened twice and afterwwards my iPhone appears to be bricked.
Forced restart doesn’t work, the only way to fix this is to restore to iOS 5.1
Anyone else have this problem and does anyone have a solution to this?

Hey guys, I currently have my iphone 4 jailbroken on ios 5.01, it entered a recovery/respring loop and it’s been impossible to fix (I’ve mainly been trying to shift+restore the 5.0.1 custom IPSW I saved when I jailbroke it, but I keep getting itunes errors). I’ve been thinking maybe I should re-jailbrake to 5.1 and then downgrade back, however I HAVE NOT backed up the blobs on my computer (they are on Cydia but since I’m in the recovery loop I can’t get them). If I run tiny umbrella in it’s current state, the iphone (and blobs) doesn’t show up, I’m wondering if I upgrade, re-jailbreak in 5.1, and THEN run Tiny Umbrella, will the old blobs show up? I’m thinking they should as I’ve had Cydia for over a year, but I don’t want to mess up and end up with a tethered jailbreak I can’t get out of… Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

So guys I also had some problems downgrading my iTouch 4 from 5.1 to 5.0.1, but still I managed to fix it now: SHSH Blobs are necessary, so use a shsh blob from another iTouch with iOS 5.0.1 and save it using TinyUmbrella, then use iFaith to search the file and follow the instructions above. Without shsh blobs you can’t downgrade it :/ or jailbreak the iOS 5.1 and save your shsh blobs when cydia is installed, again use the instructions from above! Hope this helps.

Surprisengly I was on 5.0.1 and had accidentally removed cydia. I did not have iFile or OpenSSH installed. That meant I was doomed. I tried to save my shh blobs and the first I got nothing. The next time I tried I got SHSH blobs for 4.3.3/4.2.5 and 5.0.1 !! What Luck! I am currently downloading 5.1 and purposely upgrading to re-jailbreak my iPod after I downgrade from 5.1 to 5.0.1 !!! you can grab them with tinyumbrella if you had them in cydia saved at the top for 5.0.1 or 5.0, once you have the blob itself used ifaith to create your custom ipsw to restore from, (this is important if your only at 5.1 because you upgraded but jailbroke and saved your SHSH blobs with cydia)

if you want to save it too you have to also make a file that will save your BB as well, I believe you had to run it through redsnow first then stich your ipsw file with ifaith to restore, (google it I recall seeing a method for you)

If you are on 5.1 do a tethered jailbreak download ishshit from cydia select iOS 5.0.1 then check cydia then hit save. I never saved my blobs and some how they just magically appeared after when I used this method and I have now successfully downgraded back to 5.0.1. If this works for anyone else would love the feed back! Good luck!

like the guide says, you need a windows computer. There is no way (until iFaith comes out with a Mac Version) to do this with a Mac.

hi everyone can you help me with my ipod touch 4g i bought it from a guy but it isn’t jailbroken and it was updated to ios 5.1 this is how i found it so i jailbreak it and i put cydia on it but some tweaks don’t work for me i heard that ios 5.1 firmware is the problem so i went to downgrade it to ios 5.0.1 but the problem is i don’t have 5.0.1 SHSH blobs i used tinyumbrella to find if any blobs was saved but nothing

My iPhone 4 was running 5.0.1 befor I update it to 5.1 without SHSH blob saved. After I jailbreak tethered iOS 5.1, I take a look in cydia I have SHSH: 5.0.1 and 5.1. Is that mean I have SHSH save for 5.0.1? If yes, can I grab it for my 5.0.1 SHSH blob?

I have iPod Touch 4th gen on 5.1 but I haven’t previously saved my SHSH blobs from when I had an earlier OS. What can I do to downgrade without it?
Shammer: no, it doesnt.
I tryed this, worked fine. Untill I realised that my phone had completly reset and gone too a factory setting, so I tryed too restore my data ‘ie pictures, contacts, notes..etc’ and when I don’t this it came up with an error code, even when trying too re-update my phone too get back too the new software the error code came back up. I hade too plug my phone into a different computer reset it via that computer, then plug it back into mine.
For all that hassle it’s not worth it, unless there is a way around this then I would bother doing it. Just wait for the jailbreak too come for iOS 5.1 and 5.1.1
If I download an earlier version of iTunes, can I just download an earlier iOS version on my 3gs? I seem to remember that iTunes now doesn’t allow that, but earlier versions did. Am I correct in thinking that, because if so I would like to think that I can just downgrade the 3gs to an early iOS version(i.e. 4.2.1) and then do an easier method of jailbreaking and unlocking?
