Yesterday we told you that Apple released the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. As this is a beta release and not an official public release we recommended that all users stay away from upgrading their everyday devices. The reason you do not want to update to the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware is because it is unstable, full of bugs and you also need to be a registered Apple developer.
It looks like a forum member on the iFans forums however, has figured out a way to update to the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad without being a registered Apple developer or activating your device’s UDID. This will allow the adventurous type who have read and understood the previous warnings to upgrade their iOS device to the iOS 6 beta firmware before its public release in the fall.
How To Update To iOS 6 Beta 1 Without UDID
Step 1) – The first thing you will need to do is download the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware. We cannot provide download links as this would be illegal, thus it is up to you to find a friend who has a developer account or you can use a special search engine we have heard about once or twice called Google.
Step 2) – The next thing you will need to do is restore your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to the stock iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 firmware. This is because the method to upgrade to iOS 6 beta 1 without a registered UDID involves updating your device, and updating your device Jailbroken or with content on it is not recommend (restoring reduces the chance you will experience an error).
Step 3) – Finally you will need to make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes that Apple released yesterday which is iTunes 10.6.3. For those of you who have not updated yet you can visit Apple’s official iTunes page and download it.
Step 4) – When you have made sure you are running the latest version of iTunes you will need to plug your iOS device into your computer and update it to iOS 6 beta 1. This can be done by pressing Shift + Update (Windows) or Option + Update (Mac) and selecting the corresponding iOS 6 beta 1 firmware file (remember we are not restoring, we are updating). Now, just sit back and wait for your iOS device to be updated to the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware.
Congratulations! You have just updated your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to the iOS 6 beta 1 firmware without a registered UDID. Meaning you can now experience all the breath-taking functionality iOS 6 beta 1 features before the general public. Didn’t work for me. I needed to restore.
Step 1. Make a clean install of 5.1.1 (shouldn’t have jailbreak)
Step 2. Download iOS 6 & Make sure you have the latest iTunes 10.6.3
Step 3. Now don’t use the option of Restore, what you need to do is Shift + check for update and select the ios6
The trick is once you do a clean install of 5.1.1 and you should make sure you’re phone is activated, just stroll around for few seconds and after that all you need to do is “SHIFT+ Check for Update” it will update it to 6.0 and automatically activate.
STRICTLY YOU SHOULDN’T JAILBREAK 5.1.1

i did this it worked i want to do this to my factory unlocked iphone 3gs and if i do will i still be able to get all the other betas just through over the air or do i have to restore to ios 5.1.1 and then install the newest beta

Duuuude, follow the instructions exactly and you shouldn’t have that problem! Make sure you’re not jailbroken and that you’re on iOS 5.1.1. Shift + Check for update on PC; Command + Check for update on Mac. You then select the iOS 6 ipsw that you downloaded and let it update. If you do this, but hit the restore button instead, you will get that “Unable to register…” notice. If you’re stuck on that screen, you need to plug your device into iTunes then put it into DFU mode (hold the power button and home button together for at least 10 seconds). At this point, iTunes should give you the option to restore, so click the restore button while holding command (or shift if you’re on PC) then manually select the iOS 5.1.1 ipsw, which you’ll have to manually download from the internet somewhere. This should bring you back to iOS 5.1.1 (also, this should basically be the process to downgrade from iOS 6, although I haven’t tried that yet).

I tried the new iOS 6 beta 1 on my 4S (non-jailbroken) 32GB and it worked flawlessly! the update was very easy on my Mac and besides the pressing the option key before clicking “update” and then using the beta ipsw file on my computer, it worked exactly the same as if you were updating normally. iOS 6 is amazing! And I did not experience any bugs except one when I first attempted to use turn-by-turn navigation, the app crashed and I had to reopen it and try again but the second time it worked flawlessly! The passbook app does not work yet. It will open but just has three different icons of the different types of passes/tickets it will work with and brief description of each but other than that it is non-functional.
My question is, if they do not fix the loophole, and we update through all the betas, can we eventually update to the final public release when it comes out in the fall as usual?

what if i buy a new ipad and unbox it and register it and it has a fresh ios 5.1.1 can i just dowload the ios 6.0 just to get ios 6 because i dont need to refresh to 5.1.1 because i bought one and havent jailbreak it and i havent got any app So can i do that or not
make sure it is a good .ipsw file. Make sure you have a non-jailbroken device running the latest iOS 5.1.1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes 10.6.3. If this is all good then there may be a problem with the fact that it is a unlocked phone even though it is factory unlocked and the ipsw file for the GSM iPhone 4 you have was more than likely intended for a locked phone.
Make sure you downloaded the right firmware for your device should be iphone4,1_6.0_…. And when you download it unzip the zip folder and there should be an .ipsw file in that. That is the one you need to update too.
Before you restore to iOS 5.1.1 back up your device, then once restored set up as new device and don’t download anything, make sure the device activates, the update to iOS 6 and once completed right mouse click you devices name in iTunes and click restore from backup which will put everything back on your device such as apps, contacts, music ect.
Just connect your iOS 6 device into iTunes and hit restore and it will download iOS 5.1.1 again.
