Have you ever wished you could turn your iPad into a fully functional phone that is capable of making telephone calls and sending/receiving text messages? Well, if you have, then you too probably wish you could be as cool as the guy shown below…
In all seriousness however, it is indeed possible to transform your iPad into a fully functional phone. Unfortunately though, there is a lot of caveats. The first is that it has to be a first generation iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular, the second is that it must be Jailbroken and the third is that you need to have a SIM card that can make telephone calls and send/receive text messages.
If you do indeed meet all of those requirements you can very easily turn your iPad into a phone with the [Ac!D]TelePad Cydia tweak developed by Bassam Kassem. You can check out a video of the tweak in action below.
It is worth mentioning that we have shown you how to do this in the past with a tweak called PhoneIt-iPad, but the difference is this tweak costs $19.99, and [Ac!D]TelePad is free.
How To Turn iPad Into A Phone For Free
Note: Please remember that for this to work you must have a SIM card from a phone. The data SIM card that comes with your iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular is not compatible with this tweak. It is worth mentioning that if you uninstall the [Ac!D]TelePad Cydia tweak you may experience issues with your 3G internet connectivity. If this happens you will simply need to install the TetherMe Cydia tweak.
Step 1) – The first thing you will need to do is Jailbreak your first generation iPad by following one of the guides in our How To Jailbreak section.
Step 2) – Once your first generation iPad is Jailbroken you will need to add the following repository by going into the Manage Tab, followed by the Sources section, tap the Edit button and then the Add button.

Step 3) – After you add the source, go into the Source by tapping on it and then install the [Ac!D]TelePad Cydia tweak to your iPad. Once the tweak has been installed your iPad will now be a fully-functional phone.
Congratulations! You should now be able to make calls and send/receive text messages on your iPad. If you have any further questions or thoughts please turn to the comments section.

if I recall it right, if you use an external device to have SIM “into” your iPod,
you can perform a similar process.
but it’s not recommended to do such a thing.
