Earlier today we showed you a more complicated way of Jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad Untethered on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware using the PwnageTool 5.0.1. While this method of Jailbreaking and updating your iPhone to the iOS 5.0.1 firmware for an Untethered Jailbreak works, it is a more long-winded way of going about preserving your iPhone’s baseband for an Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak and unlock.
If you are looking to Jailbreak your iPhone on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware Untethered while still maintaining your unlock in a quick manner then this guide from iJailbreak.com will allow you to do just this.
Preserve Baseband PwnageTool 5.0.1
Step 1) – Download PwnageTool 5.0.1 to your Desktop from the iJailbreak Downloads Section or from the direct download link below.
Download PwnageTool 5.0.1 for Mac OS X
Note: The PwnageTool tool is only available for the MAC OS X operating system. If you have Windows, it is possible to run the PwnageTool but only via VMWare (we may make a tutorial on how to do this at a later date). Please follow our RedSn0w 0.9.10b2 how to guide which will show you how to jailbreak the iOS 5.0.1 firmware untethered for Windows by clicking here.
Step 2) – Once you have downloaded PwnageTool, you are going to now run it. Once PwnageTool is up and running, click okay to the pop-up window. Now, if you have never used the PwnageTool you will notice there are many options presented to you. We will guide you through to process so do not get overwhelmed. The first thing you must do is click on the Simple mode button in the top left hand corner of the screen (if it is not automatically selected).
Now once you ensure Simple mode is selected, you will need to select the iPhone as your iOS device you are Jailbreaking. Once you do select the iPhone a big check mark will appear over it. Click the Blue arrow to continue…
Step 3) – The PwnageTool 5.0.1 Jailbreaking tool will now try and locate the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file. If it cannot find the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file you will need to download it from the iJailbreak Downloads Section and then manually select it.
The PwnageTool will now ask you whether you want to save the IPSW to your desktop. Click YES.
Next PwnageTool will ask you whether you have a contract that would normally be activated through iTunes. If you are unlocking your iPhone with UltraSn0w 1.2.5 or GEVEY SIM you will want to click the NO button.
Step 4) – After the PwnageTool processes the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file you will need to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Once the PwnageTool recognizes your iPhone in DFU mode it will place it in Pwned DFU mode. iTunes should now pop-up saying your iDevice is in recovery mode (it is actually in DFU mode), iTunes will also prompt you to restore your iDevice.
Hold down the OPTION button and click on the restore button, you can now browse and select your custom firmware file (not the stock iOS 5.0.1 firmware file) you created. Once you have selected this firmware file, simply wait for it to be restored on your iDevice.
Note: Ensure you do not do anything to disturb your iDevice, while iTunes is restoring the custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware file.
Step 5) – With your iPhone now upgraded and untethered on the iOS 5.0.1 firmware, you can launch Cydia and follow our How To guide for unlock with UltraSn0w 1.2.5. Additionally, you can use a GEVEY SIM card to unlock your iPhone as long as you have a supported baseband version.
Congratulations! You have just unlocked your iPhone running iOS 5.0.1 and have an Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak. If you have any further questions or need help leave a reply in the comments section below…

makes a custom firmware with NOBB at the start of name (no upgrade of bb)
once firmware is applied thru itunes etc…
just re-run redsnow & jailbreak…activates phone then :)

It may be important to mention that you WILL NEED an att sim to do initial activation after it re-springs after you do your 5.0.1 update. a bummer for me, I’m sitting here with a jailbroken phone i can’t use until i find a att carrier sim… :(

just run redsnow to hacktivate & jailbreak after os5.01 is installed…..
hacktivate with redsn0w and it’ll pass u through the activation screen.

Iphone 4 ios 5.0.1 BB 3.10.1 upgraded sucessfully with Pwnage Tool 5.0.1. But not activated as per instruction during the CFW build process. Need orginal sim to activate and use Gevey with Furiousmod.
I tried countless numbers of ways just to be able to use my iphone… the initial issue was a no service problem. This issue has erupted and evolved into a problem with restoration as well. My restoration issue is that I keep getting error (-1), which is supposed to happen when you try to preserve an unlockable baseband (which, I never tried to do)… I’ve only been able to escape restore mode thru jailbreaking and even then I still have no service when the jailbreak is completed… I just need to sit down with an expert and talk about all this mess my iphone 4 is giving me…
So if I have baseband 5.16.05 should I try and find the 4.3 firmware instead of 5.0.1 and if so would this method still work?
i bought a used iphone 4 yesterday and it was unlock working on Gevey ultra pro( pro written on back side) till i turned it off then while switching it bak cannot boot showing apple logo(bricked)
What i collect from my memory and it was on ios 4.X.X i m not sure, cydia was there! ..i don’t know the baseband..

hi, dont update the stock 5.0.1 software. go to redsn0w and when u jail break it, and click on install ipad baseband. that worked for me. changed it to 6.15 and i was able to unlock using ultrasn0w
that means u need to do tethered reboot

yes iTunes version matters and you must have saved your SHSH blobs that would have helped in downgrading !!

The last unlock able baseband is 04.10.01 and your s is more than it that means it cannot be unlocked. Wait time is more because it seems developers have lost interest in iPhone 4 and are looking at issues with 4S.

Hey. I’ve got an Iph4, bb 1.59.00 and currently running 4.3.1. I’ve been trying to read up on how to j/b to 5.0.1 and I always get stuck on Itunes error 1600. I’ve also used Ireb (win) and the latest redsn0w to boot into a pwned DFU state before trying a custom restore on Itunes with 3 different hactivated ipsw. Still the same error. My question is, now that I have my shsh blobs saved and that there’s an untethered jb for 5.0.1, can I do a custom restore with the stock 5.0.1 firmware? Please advice on what I need to do next.

If you have the later version of 3gs, don’t attempt to upgrade it to the ipad 5.16.0 baseband. The radio chip won’t accept the upgrade and it will be permanently damaged. Double check what version you have, before you do this.
