Awhile ago a Russian hacker by the name of Alexey Borodin managed to bypass Apple’s in-app purchases, this allows users to download in-app content for free. Apple tried to block the hacker, but failed as his in-app hack still works fine for iOS devices. They did promise that the hack will be patched in iOS 6 and now the Russian hacker has commented that his game is over.
Apple’s patch and security updates in iOS 6 has apparently worked well and the hack no longer works in iOS 6. Borodin wrote on his blog that the game is over and Apple has won. He has tried, but failed in bypassing the new API’s set by Apple in a recent fix that was provided to developers. He also suggests, that thanks to his hack, Apple has improved security in iOS 6.
By examining apple’s last statement about in-app purchases in iOS 6, I can say, that currently the game is over. At this time we have no way to bypass updated APIs. It’s good news for everyone, we have updated security in iOS, developers have their air-money. But, service will still remain operational until iOS 6 comes out.
However, this is no reason for Apple or anyone to celebrate, because iOS 6 doesn’t come out till October and until then users can get in-app purchases for free in iOS 5! Apple has to do something to fix the loophole in the current version of iOS. So far, over 9,00,000 in-app purchases have been made for free using the hack. The hacker also mentions that he is going to see how Apple blocks his patch on Mac OS X. As he recently used a similar hack in the Mac App Store to get in-app purchases for free. We’ll just have to wait and watch Apple does! But, iOS 6 is safe and sound, for now…
