During the WWDC 2012 Apple confirmed that those Macs purchased after June 11th, 2012 would be eligible for a free upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion through their up-to-date program This applies to all Mac models whether it be a new MacBook Pro with Retina display or a MacBook Air.
Recently Apple has updated their website to include more information about the up-to-date program. Essentially it is just a reminder to all of those who have purchased a qualifying Mac computer after June 11th so that they can come back to the up-to-date program page when Apple releases Mountain Lion.
At this time it is expected Apple will release OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on July 25th, 2012. This is a day after Apple’s scheduled Q2 Earnings Call. When the time comes that Mountain Lion is released make sure to visit Apple’s up-to-date program page within 30 days to receive your copy of Mountain Lion for free.

I paid for lion 30 dollars few months ago and now the new lion comes out. Oh my…I will just get a pirate version. Otherwise we will go bankrupt spending money on this paid updates.

I submitted a request for the free upgrade for an iMac purchased 28 Jun. The submission form requested the serial number, where purchased, and an image of the proof-of-purchase from the box. The response was that my submission was successful and “We will send your App Code by email once your claim has been validated.” I have no idea how long that’s going to take.
